Short Term Goals

The Keweenaw is littered with dozens of short hiking trails, some of which are very close to each other! By connecting some of these trails, we can quickly build much larger interconnected trail systems with relatively little upfront cost and effort.

We are in various stages of working with landowner partners to bring some of these connections to fruition, but have been asked not to publicize these potential projects until further along in the process.

Mid Term Goals

For all of the natural beauty and outdoor recreation the Keweenaw offers, one thing it lacks is backpacking trails. Our intermediate goals include establishing overnight and weekend-length backpacking routes within the Keweenaw Peninsula in order to bring a more intimate natural experience to the Keweenaw.

(Very) Long Term Goals

Our dream goal is an interconnected hiking trail system spanning the entire Keweenaw, similar to how ATVs and snowmobiles can currently travel shore to shore with very little time on roads. The core of this system would be a feature trail running the length of the Keweenaw from the North Country Trail (NCT) all the way to Copper Harbor.

Although we have already begun to work toward these goals, we are well aware that these timelines are on the scale of decades, not years. Our mission is to build an organization that will outlive any of us and continue to improve hiking and backpacking opportunities in the Keweenaw for generations to come.
